18 – The Moon
The Moon speaks to the opposing forces of illumination and obscurity. It exerts its gravitational pull on the seas from which we emerged and measures time through its cycles. It is a constant, yet always-changing presence in our lives, ruling the night sky and stirring our primal memory.
Traditionally, this card puts less emphasis on the Moon itself, focusing instead on the nocturnal activity of the natural world. Dogs are restless beneath its light, and a lobster crawls up from the depths of the sea to bask in its pale glow. This is strong imagery that has remained constant over the centuries, so rather than rethink it, I chose to refine it.
The Moon is the focus of my card: a huge, fiery blood moon that coincidentally occurred while I was creating this image. I traded the restlessness of the dogs for the self-assurance of the cat.
The cat hunts beneath the Moon without fear, preying on creatures exposed by its light. She pins a snake beneath her paws, symbolizing mastery over emotion and uncertainty.
Under the moonlight, boundaries blur. Land fades into water, and water rises onto the land under the tidal pull. Certainty is lost, and clarity gives way to confusion. The cat is a creature of instinct, confident and unquestioning in this liminal landscape. In the water, a woman floats freely, relinquishing control and surrendering to the hidden world. Her hair flows over her fingers, while a lobster is camouflaged by the tangled weeds.
Although the Moon can hide or expose reality, the card is not about the power of external forces. Instead, it is about the power of the subconscious to deceive us, obscure our desires, and heighten our emotions. It questions our trust in what we believe and in the accuracy of our perceptions. It is a card of doubt. We can fall prey to the darkness of uncertainty, or we can heighten our awareness, using the reflected light of the Moon to aid our self-reflection. We can honor our intuition and instinct without surrendering our intellect and discernment.
