9 – The Hermit

The hermit inspects an ant on a leaf at night using a magnifying glass. His stone hut is in the background.

The Hermit in this card stands apart from society not in rejection of it, but in service to understanding it more clearly. This figure represents solitude as a methodological choice. Withdrawal here is purposeful, disciplined, and directed toward observation rather than contemplation for its own sake.

The Hermit’s isolation is not ascetic. It is investigative. His distance from the crowd allows him to perceive patterns that vanish at scale. By narrowing focus, he gains access to complexity. The traditional lantern of the Hermit is reimagined as sustained attention. Light is not broadcast. It is concentrated.

The Hermit does not dramatize knowledge. He records it. His posture is quiet and intent, signaling restraint rather than revelation. This is authority without spectacle. He does not proclaim truth. He documents it, verifies it, and accepts responsibility for its implications.

Importantly, this Hermit does not remain apart indefinitely. The knowledge gained in isolation is carried back into the world as stewardship, warning, and ethical obligation. Withdrawal is temporary. Responsibility is permanent.

I modeled my Hermit on on E. O. Wilson, the American biologist, naturalist, ecologist, and entomologist. After an injury to his left eye as a boy he decided to focus on insects, as it was easier for him to observe small things through a magnifying glass than to do normal field observation.

Wilson’s life work demonstrates that wisdom emerges from patience, repetition, and humility before reality. The smallest subjects reveal the largest systems. Ant colonies, ecosystems, and evolutionary networks stand in for the Hermit’s mountain path. Insight is earned by staying with the question longer than comfort allows.

The snake reference in this card is the decorative top of the walking stick, which depicts a snake swallowing an egg. This is meant to symbolize the themes of primordial beginnings, cosmic order, personal transformation, and the raw power of life and renewal.

A stone hut, or “cabane“, in the vinyards arround Baumes-de-Venise, France served as a backdrop for this card.
