0 – The Fool
In the traditional design of this card, the Fool appears as a young man at the edge of a cliff, gazing upward rather than watching his path. He carries a hobo stick and holds a white rose as a symbol of innocence or purity of intention. A dog jumps at his side, sometimes interpreted as a playful companion, other times as a warning. The bright sun overhead suggests optimism, while mountains in the distance suggest the future and the unknowns ahead of him.
I see the Fool not as a simpleton, but as a naïf—an innocent embarking on adulthood without yet having the experience to recognize danger. My version keeps many of the traditional symbolic elements but shifts the tone. I chose a young woman to emphasize that the Fool’s openness, curiosity, and the willingness to risk the unknown are not gender-specific. Historically, it would have been unusual to depict a young woman traveling alone, and young women often face greater physical risks than young men, so the choice felt both meaningful and contemporary.
I updated the Fool’s traditional bundle to a modern hobo bag to translate an old symbol into something familiar today while preserving its meaning. The Fool travels light because she has underestimated the demands of the journey. My Fool still holds a white flower, but she is no longer standing at the edge of a cliff. Instead, she walks confidently along a rainbow-colored path that ends abruptly. I intentionally left the nature of the obstacle ambiguous. It could be as innocuous as a broken patch of pavement with a puddle reflecting the sky, or it could be a threshold into a looking-glass world. Either way, it serves as an awakening to the impending change in the course of her life.
The character Penny Lane from Almost Famous captured the blend of charm, innocence, and vulnerability I wanted for my Fool. She was a muse to the other characters in the film, and she became mine as well. The Fool’s blouse and skirt also reference the movie’s wardrobe, which I recreated in Photoshop using movie stills and an auction photograph of the original blouse for reference.
The wooded background, glowing in afternoon sunlight, suggests that the Fool has come from a place of comfort and familiarity. She is moving away from the warmth and safety of her fenced-in world into a darker, less protected place. The vegetation shifts from young forest trees and plants to thick, gnarled trees, and the fence is replaced by thistles, thorns, and poison ivy. A snake is hiding beneath the leaves near her feet, preparing to strike a large cockroach. This predatory snake foreshadows the dangers that exist for her as she leaves the happy path of childhood. An owl sits above her, hidden in the branches of an old tree. The owl is a symbol of wisdom that will no longer watch over her once she leaves the boundary of her protected world. Its presence suggests that she will have to acquire her own wisdom through experience.
Her dog jumps by her side begging for her attention. She ignores him because he is not a partner she has brought along for protection, but a childhood pet she has outgrown. His attempts at warning are merely a nuisance.
Just as the Fool is beginning her personal journey through life, this card marks the beginning of the tarot’s journey as well. Before we can gain the wisdom of the tarot, we must question the familiar and be prepared to leave our mental comfort zones and face our inner selves with clear-eyed honesty. The Fool reminds us that every meaningful journey begins not only with uncertainty, but also with curiosity, hope, and the courage to move forward into the unknown.
